The Missing Piece of the Holy Spirit

For a lot of us, the Holy Spirit got reduced to a category. The Third One. The one who shows up in charismatic churches with the loud music, or in Catholic confirmations, or somewhere in the Nicene Creed we recited without really meaning it. But the Spirit in Scripture is not a category. The Spirit is a presence — the very breath of God, moving inside a human life.

The word itself is breath

In Hebrew, ruach. In Greek, pneuma. In both languages, the same word means breath, wind, spirit. It is what God breathes into the dust in Genesis 2. It is what hovers over the waters in Genesis 1. It is what Jesus breathes onto his disciples after the resurrection. The Holy Spirit is not a doctrine you agree to. It is the breath you are already breathing whether you noticed it or not.

The Advocate, not the enforcer

Jesus called the Spirit the Paraclete — the one called alongside. Advocate. Comforter. The one who reminds. The one who stands next to you in the courtroom, not the one prosecuting you. If the version of the Holy Spirit you were handed felt more like a spiritual surveillance system than a friend, you were handed a bad translation.

The Spirit is not the finger wagging in your face. The Spirit is the hand on your back that got you through Wednesday.

Something bigger is moving through the room. Something is with you. Paul calls it in whom we live and move and have our being.

The fruit is the tell

Paul gives a list that we've heard so many times we've stopped hearing it: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Notice what is not on the list. Certainty is not on the list. Volume is not on the list. Correctness is not on the list. If a spiritual experience is producing anxiety, arrogance, or contempt, it is not the Spirit. The Spirit's fingerprints are almost boringly consistent.

How the Spirit actually shows up

Sometimes as the sudden urge to text someone. Sometimes as the peace that lands three seconds before the news does. Sometimes as the sentence in a book that stops you cold. Sometimes as the tears that finally come after months of numbness. The Spirit is rarely loud. The Spirit is almost always near.
